On Sunday October 3, 2021 during Morning Prayer, we commemorated the feast day of St. Francis and we asked God to bless our pets. Many of you attended, and even placed favorite photos of your beloved pets on our bulletin board to receive a ‘virtual’ blessing.
At that service, Joe John, our Head Verger, gave an inspirational ‘Reflection for the Day’, and the dream of a new ministry at St. James' was proposed.
Our deacon, Mary Abrams, asked if I would coordinate this ministry and I have accepted.
At St. James', we already have exceptional Outreach ministries in place that depend upon the generosity of our membership.
We have remarkable volunteers active in the Oldham County Food Bank drive, as well as our Sewing ministry, producing Blankets of Healing/Joy; Laundry Love, Habitat for Humanity, Wayside Christian Mission, Prison Ministry, Back to School back pack & school supply, and the list goes on-and-on. And yet…
…and yet, I suspect that we can do more. Do you suppose we can develop a ministry that will provide for the needs of animals in the care of local organizations to provide food, supplies, donations, etc., on a monthly or quarterly basis? I certainly do!
As Joe reminded us in his Reflection, God created animals, and St. Francis referred to the animals as “our brothers and sisters” — all children of God who require our care and our love. [by the way, I have attached Joe’s “reflection” [click HERE]
I look forward to hearing from you, your willingness to help form this ministry, and your creative ideas to kick start this worthwhile and very important ministry.
Remember, our furry, feathered, scaled brothers and sisters are a part of God’s Kingdom that we have been instructed to love!
Peace
Mary Harding, Chair
