Sermon of a Style: Waging Hope during Pandemic Days
I read these all week long: Exodus 17:1-7 — Romans 5:1-11 — John 4:5-42 — Psalm 95
This morning I listened to a webcast of The Most Rev. Michael Curry preach exactly what I needed to hear. He sang the same words I sing to myself when the world is too dark and the news is too dizzying to comprehend: “Jesus loves me this I know.”
That is all I know for sure.
Armed with that knowledge I…
1. Paid half of my entire pledge online.
2. Wrote to loved ones who can’t leave their homes or be visited by anyone for at least two weeks.
It’s been a long week of dark and dizzying news. I am still waiting for my son to return home from college. We have both been in places where someone within six feet tested positive. So while I want to connect with every person in my congregation I cannot.
My work is predicated upon the Incarnate ministry of God in Jesus Christ. As wonderful as virtual worship is, it is not Incarnate. I cannot virtually anoint you with oil. I cannot hold your hand. I cannot hug your neck. BUT, I can wait on the One who is Incarnate.
Waiting is my work now.
For the rest of today my to-do list is
1. Walk to the mailbox.
2. Listen to recordings of Mahalia Jackson praise God.
3. Take a nap.
Watch Bishop Curry’s sermon here.
Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so
Little Ones to him Belong
They are weak but he is Strong
Yes, Jesus Loves Me.
