St. James’ Annual Meeting

Henrietta Pepper January 26, 2025

Many of you know my story regarding my family’s journey with St. James’.  My husband and I were married here 35 years ago.  We raised our children here. We’ve been involved in a variety of ministries, served on the Vestry several terms and enjoyed serving on Committees.  We’ve watched the parish change and evolve over time.  Our faith has remained strong and has been our rock.  That will never change.

I want to give that context before my comments because I feel like that is at the core of why we are all sitting here today.  Our faith in Jesus Christ. Our faith in God our Father.  That is our guidepost in everything we do here.

Your Vestry met in earlier this month to discuss the current state of the parish in preparation for this meeting today.  The discussion was candid and fluid.  There was a common theme amongst all voices.  It’s clear that in order to live out and sustain our mission of Loving People.  Serving People. we must FOCUS.

Whether you are a long-term parishioner like me, or a newcomer to the parish, you likely have observed this parish likes to stay busy!  It’s in our DNA to be creative and activate new ideas to engage membership and the community at-large where we see needs or problems to solve.  With all those moving parts going on, we have also become much more diligent about identifying AND communicating what the realities regarding the health of our parish.  Health meaning, human capacity and abilities.  Resources health.  Our Grounds health.  And ultimately, financial health.

During that Vestry conversation, I had an A HA moment.  I think we are in a Tipping Point moment in time.  Our decision-making and areas of focus for the next couple of years are going to determine the destiny of this parish.  And we all can be a part of that exciting time. The Vestry asked me to share these reflections with you in hopes that this will inspire you to help in this effort.

It sounds daunting but its really a simple concept. FOCUS.

We need to seize this opportunity to prayerfully reflect on the information we have absorbed.  Press pause and give us time to breathe.  Reset where we need to. Pivot where we need to. Innovate where we need to.

Rev. Debbie, our newly elected Vestry, ministries and committee leaders are committed to creating a pathway forward focused on GROWTH.  If we grow our membership and engagement, all the health issues I mentioned earlier will organically solve themselves. As a visionary thinker, that’s a tall order. However, if we stay disciplined and focus on our strategies to grow while using our resources wisely, we will be more vibrant and engaged; reaching more people; and living our mission more effectively.

Here are some simple ways we can do this together:  Invite people to church services and activities on our campus.  Get connected with one of the ministries and help those grow.  Join a committee and offer your time and talent.

I am embracing my love for St. James’ more than ever and am optimistic for the road ahead. Let’s stay focused on growth!

God bless you all.
