“Sports Center” It’s Not

Lent Madness Recap to Date —  #3

I thought I’d throw everybody a curveball (Sports Center talk?) today and talk about two previous LOSERS. Cough. Cough. What?! Saintly LOSERS?

Well, it’s Saint Patrick’s Day…a loser he was not…but he WAS during the Lent Madness competition. The Wearin’ O’ the Green didn’t help him beat Brother Lawrence in the competition last year. And then…

…and THEN…on Friday, March 19th, St. Joseph’s feast day, Saint Joseph was another “loser” in the run for the Golden Halo.

 How can that be?

Saint Joseph…Jesus’ earthly father! Saint Patrick, shepherd and driver of snakes from Ireland and the Patron Saint of Ireland.

Well, that just goes to show us that there are many more saints who impacted the lives of countless people through the ages and famous names don’t always get the glory.

I think the challenge in getting involved with Lent Madness is the massive research the bloggers have written for the many, many saints they researched. The research demonstrates  how so many people — real people — living breathing regular ol’ people did the right things to move towards eventual sainthood.

Let’s face it. Saint Joseph already earned his Golden Halo centuries ago. So too did Saint Patrick. They’re not asking for instant replay and referees staring at a monitor to determine foul or no foul. They are both magnanimous as are the many other saints who lost or got trounced in the Lent Madness brackets. Suffice it to say that the “BIG REFEREE IN THE SKY” makes the final determination as to who is the winner…and quite frankly, the Lord says “They’re all winners.”

I can’t emphasize enough that Lent Madness is FUN and EDUCATIONAL.  Abstinence? Fasting? No need to abstain or fast from reading about the saints and getting involved in a fun Lenten Tradition.

Oh, yes, and don’t forget to read Mike Owens’ weekly blog. As Mike stated in his 2nd Blog, “I decided this would be a good opportunity to see how the lives of these holy people reflected the fruit of the Holy Spirit.” No pun intended, but his Blog is really food for thought and how the Holy Spirit’s impacted the lives of the 32 Saints in this year’s competition.

Mike’s final blog will be posted this weekend. His research provides thoughtful insights regarding the Holy Spirit and the saints.

Get involved. Go Lent Madness.
