“Sports Center” It’s Not

Joseph R. John March 28, 2021

What a RELIGIOUS March Madness it has been this weekend.

A Christian school, Oral Roberts,  puts up a good fight, but does lose . An Augustinian school almost pulls it off, but Villanova loses. A Jesuit School, Loyola Chicago, gets beaten by a Baptist school, Baylor. .

Oh, well — ite’s the same God, isn’t it? And then — can you believe this — a Jesuit school, Gonzaga, TROUNCES yet another Jesuit school, Creighton. Hey God, what gives? Yes, God has a sense of humor. And that is evident in Lent Madness.

Here we go moving from the ELATE EIGHT to the FAITHFUL FOUR. Keep in mind that no matter how engaged you are with the Men’s or Women’s tournament play, NONE of them — I repeat — NONE of them offer a Golden Halo to the ultimate winner. Keep that in mind NCAA.

And here we go, if you haven’t been following the Lent Madness bracket busters:

Catherine of Genoa (no she didn’t invent salami) will go up against Absalom Jones.  In the other bracket, Ives of Kermartin (who beat the beer meister, Arnulf) will compete against Benedict the Moor.

Lent Madness won’t tease you for another week. The GAMES will continue at the beginning of Holy Week and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing before the end of Holy Week who won the Golden Halo…HAH! the NCAA makes you wait until after Easter Sunday .

I challenge you to go to lentmadness  and read about the four saints in contention for the coveted (“coveted” is that sinful?) Golden Halo.

Also, peruse the MANY, MANY comments made on the daily competitions from the people around the world who are voting for the saint who will advance. And if you want to learn more about the saints who got trounced over the past four weeks, you’ll get some interesting insights to interesting people who are so much like you and me  — human beings with soooooo many foibles and yet, God loves us. That’s cool. YEAAAAAAAA GOD.

And one more passing note — Elizabeth, our wonderful Rector, and I, want to thank Mike Owens for his thoughtful blogs this year focusing on the Holy Spirit and his/her influence on the Saints. “His/Her”…now that’s a great discussion point, isn’t it? — tease, tease, but not for this blog..

Peace
