“I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me - they're cramming for their final exam.”
--- George Carlin
Tongue-in-cheek? Sure, but what can I say? I’m 71 years old and I have NEVER read the entire bible — or better yet, even 10 % of it.
I was a cradle Roman Catholic and yes, we owned a Bible. It was a very lovely book and I’m sure my mother paid a small fortune for it. It was HUGE with lots of pictures and large print. However, it’s sole purpose in our household was to be a filing cabinet of Mass Cards, sympathy notes, as well as being a record book of marriages, baptisms, confirmations and deaths. Other than opening the book for stuffing information, it was never read.
READ the Bible? HUH!? We would go to Mass every Sunday and it was my impression that Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were it.
Never knew how many books were in the Old Testament. What in the world is the Torah? The Twelve Tribes? Names I can’t even begin to pronounce? Everyone begatting!
And to be quite honest, I never knew there were so many books in the New Testament, not realizing that the Quadriform Gospel was just a mere 15% of the New Testament and 6% of the entire Bible.
Oh, I have lots more to talk about — and I will. But here’s what I want to say: I am so glad to have accepted the challenge to read the Bible in 90 days. It goes beyond crossing yet another thing off my bucket list. I’m finding it INTERESTING, PUZZLING, and VERY thought-provoking.
Thanks to our Rector, Elizabeth, and Deacon, Mary who threw out the challenge.
Well, I’ll have more to say in a couple of weeks as I move through Kings, Chronicles, Psalms, and more.
