A Letter to the Saint James Congregation

Rev. Debbie Dehler March 23, 2023

Dear St. James,

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the warm welcome Jeff and I received when we were “visitors” this past Sunday!

This Sunday, I have asked that everyone begin wearing name tags so that we can get to know one another. We will begin with the sticky kind until we can create something reusable. If you are interested in helping with that project after Easter, just let Annie know!

Getting to know one another is going to be a big part of these next months. I’m going to tell you bits about me as we go along and I hope you will do the same. After I have my church computer set up, know my email address, and understand the phone system—all of which I expect will happen this coming week—I will be better equipped (pun intended) to make arrangements to meet with you.

In the meantime, here’s a bit about me.

+ I prefer to be called Debbie (not Deb or Debra). If you feel you need a title, please use “Reverend” or “Pastor,” please do not use “Mother.” (I am a mom of two and when I was ordained my parents lovingly told me they would not call me “Mother Debbie!”)

+ I ask a lot of questions. I don’t have all the answers. I want to learn with you.

+ I believe that God is present in all things and that each of us is a beloved child of our Creator.

+ I believe that breathing is a form of prayer, God is LOVE, and music has the power to experience the Divine.

+ I deeply believe that the foundational theme of Scripture is God’s deep desire to be in relationship with us—that God NEVER leaves.

This is an exciting time for all of us! Thank you for inviting me to be in relationship with you.
