The excitement was high on the 1st of July when we started our journey and took on the challenge of Reading the Bible in 90 days. More than 25 people are gathering on Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings to share their experiences as we read the entire Bible.
Reading the entire Bible is something many of us stated that we have long wanted to do but have been unsuccessful in our previous attempts. We now want the gratification of knowing that we have completed our goal and that we would now be joining the ranks of only 10% of Christians who have read the Bible from cover to cover.
While this is a serious challenge, it is made more difficult when we realize that the goal of our challenge is to “Read attentively every word of the Bible in 90 days”. The words “attentively” and “every” are the operative words that make this an even more daunting challenge.
“Attentively” means that we have to remain focused on what we are reading. We cannot let our minds go on automatic while reading and wandering to other subjects. “Every word” means that we cannot skim though the minute details of some passages. We cannot skip passages that are repetitious. We are determined to read every word.
We discussed our concerns and what we felt would be the roadblocks that could prevent us from completing this challenge. Most of us were concerned about the time it would take. Reading the Bible in 90 days means reading 12 pages of the Bible every day, about an hour of reading every day. Some were worried about finding an hour that they could devote to reading attentively every day. We are all well aware of how difficult it will be to get caught up if we get behind in the reading schedule.
Some expressed that not understanding what they were reading or how to interpret the relevance of the Bible to their lives, had played a role in the failure of their previous attempts. We talked about the fact that this is a reading program and not a Bible study. In reading the Bible in the relative short time of 90 days we will be able to remember the key people, and events and their connections to one another. We will get a better picture of the flow of history as it is depicted in the Bible. After these 90 days if desired we can identify topics for further in-depth study.
Our weekly meetings will help us meet our goal. We will encourage each other, share our questions and thoughts and reflect on our insights.
At the end of our first meeting we said a commitment prayer where each of us, as a group and then privately asked for God’s help with this challenge. We hope that others will keep us in their prayers as we journey together seeking the relationship athat God wants with us and that we are striving to find with God.
