Why I Give

Be the Light -- Stewardship 2023

Flashback to 2009 as I’m nearing retirement, ready to stop the commuting to Baltimore, and ready to make a “LEAP OF FAITH” and move from the Roman Catholic Church to the Episcopal Church – or as some of us say “Catholic  Lite”. . Quite a life-changing leap for a person who thought he was going to become a Jesuit Priest. But I digress…

I knew that I wanted to be more than a C&E Catholic, that’s Christmas and Easter…but the Roman Catholic Church just wasn’t doing it for me, and hadn’t for years — issues not to be discussed here.

Some folks who helped me find the way were Sharon Receveur, my sister in Law Lisa and brother Charles, and Jim Trimble --- jujst to name a few. They helped my discernment in taking the leap of faith

And so, since coming to St. James twelve years ago, and being received into the Episcopal Church, I continue to marvel at this congregation of great. loving and caring people. It’s like a chapter out of Star Wars where I can always feel “the Force.”

St. James has been a second home to me, with many of the parishioners becoming my second family. Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Jedi Knight, said "The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy.”

So why do I give? Well, it’s all because the St. James’ Force, or the “Good Side”, is full of compassion, selflessness,  enlightenment, healing, caring, sharing, mercy and benevolence…and much, much more.  Real people, caring for God and their neighbors is so apparent at Saint James. And that’s why I give.

Yes, I I give because of you and what you bring to this historic church. This year’s theme is probably one of the best we’ve ever had…be the light…and yest you are the light. All of you have been a beacon of light for my journey through the Episcopal Church, supporting and encouraging me in the numerous positions I have served in the church and the diocese over the past twelve years

Yes, you are the Light. You are the Force (all of our us) You are the embodiment of our Mission —Loving People. Serving People. That’s why I give and will continue to give, even to the end of my days when there is legacy gift to this wonderful church.

Please BE the Light and Give Generously.

PEACE+…and may the FORCE of St. James be with you.
