Today we are commemorating St Francis of Assisi. Churches around the world will commemorate the life of St Francis by bringing their animals to church to have them blessed. Bringing animals to church seems a little crazy. We know that it can be chaotic. Dogs could start chasing the cats, the cats could try to eat the birds, the birds could get out of their cages and fly away, and if the spiders get loose, I’ll run away.
Once, at a Blessing of the Animals at one of our parishes in Kentucky, a cat, who was in the arms of its owner, got scared by a dog, who got too close, and trying to get away, climbed up its owner’s face and leaped into a tree. An ambulance had to be called to take the woman to the hospital to care for her wounds and fire trucks had to come to get the cat down out of the tree.
