The Liturgical and Lectionary Calendar

Joseph R. John December 04, 2019

On Sunday, December 1, our Rector, Elizabeth, wished the congregation “Happy New Year”. HUH!? Wasn’t she a month too early? Well, not really.

The First Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of the new liturgical calendar every year, and it also marks the start of a new lectionary cycle. In other words, we progress from year “A”, to year “B”, to year “C” — a 3-year cycle. Therefore, December 1, 2019 (the First Sunday of Advent) marked the New Liturgical Year, and we have moved to Year “A”. From Advent of 2018 (last year) to this year’s First Sunday of Advent, we have been in year “C” of the lectionary cycle.
