I must admit that this year’s Lent Madness is quite a collection of head scratchers. I say that because I feel certain that if many of these saints, their lives and nicknames were part of a “Jeopardy” quiz, chances are there would be NO winners.

But I’m not here to badmouth these folks who are part of Lent Madness 2021. If you wanted to see a “Fool”, you got your wish by Isidora the Simple beating Simon the Fool.

Theodora beat Theodora. That’s not a misprint. The Empress (Theodora) beat Theodore of Alexandria. And in a contest of tongue twisters, Euphrosyne beat Evagrius.

Seriously folks. I’m not making up thse names…this year’s “Madness” forces you to read the bios ‘cause these are not household names, or names you’d recognized from Sunday School.

Perhaps a name you might be familiar with is Dunstan, who was Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, Bishop of Worcester, Bishop of London and Archbishop of Canterbury, He handily defeated Maryam of Qidun 68% to 32%

So it’s an odd year…don’t we know! BUT…Lent Madness is still fun and its really interesting to read about so many ordinary folks who found their way to sainthood and ultimately to meet their Maker.

And don’t forget to read Mike Owens’ weekly blog. As Mike stated in his 2nd Blog, “I decided this would be a good opportunity to see how the lives of these holy people reflected the fruit of the Holy Spirit.” No pun intended, but his Blog is really food for thought and how the Holy Spirit’s impacted the lives of the 32 Saints in this year’s competition.

Get involved. Go Lent Madness.
