Learning with you

Rev. Debbie Dehler August 31, 2024

Every Monday at 10:15 a small group of women meet at Panera for a book study. The book, Into the Mess and Other Jesus Stories: Reflection on the Life of Christ, by Debie Thomas is a series of essays based on stories told in the Gospels.

Together, we read through an essay, (maybe two, if we have time) stopping periodically to talk about how the words and stories are impacting us. We might reflect on something relevant that ties our own experience to Thomas’s commentary. We may wonder what she is trying to express. We get curious about scripture and may consider the different translations available.

We can go deep or stay at the surface, but we have inquiring hearts and minds. Over and over again we express thanks for the freedom to be able to discern and discuss, wrestle and wrangle, argue with and augment the stories found in the Bible.

It is through these hours together we can grow, can learn to understand God in a new way, can recognize our own transformation throughout our lives and through these hours, to be people striving to know the Holy Trinity more intimately.

These are times that bring me so much joy. Learning with others. Hearing how God has been a part of lives. Finding new interpretations. Sharing with one another—maybe a little cautiously sometimes and freely and abundantly at other times.

I believe we are called to do this kind of work—to read and discuss scripture. To share experiences and opportunities placed in front of us that help us individually and communally grow in our faith and understanding.

I hope you can join a group to discuss scripture or a book that brings insight into a life of faith. I hope you can make this kind of time and find joy in learning, growing and transforming. Don’t forget to invite me to join you. It’s one of my most favorite things to do.

Learning with you,
