I was ordained twenty four years ago today at Grace Church, Muskogee, OK by the Rt Rev Robert Moody. I only spent one year of my curacy there but Grace and Max sent me forward with the best start a person could ask for.
Before he was rector of Grace Church Muskogee Max was the school chaplain for Casady Episcopal Day School where I attended grades 8-12. Every morning for five years I sat in chapel where our then Chaplain Max Berry started our day with a joke then a homily then a prayer. As an arrogant teenager I remember thinking, “I could come up with a better homily than that.” Sorry Max. It wasn’t long after that I became a school chaplain leading chapel for a room full of children with little to no interest in chapel. I feel you Max, I feel you.
