Why St. James'
When our two older boys were in elementary school, we were looking for a church home. We had visited a few churches and even attended one for a while, but never felt they were we were called to be. A friend told us about her church, St. James', and invited us to come visit some Sunday. (I guess it’s true most people come to church because they are invited.).
I’ll admit, I was charmed by the physical presence of the building. The beautiful stone, with the welcoming red doors. It felt like a sacred place then and it continues to feel that way to me today. I love the comfort of the liturgy and the simplicity of the sanctuary. In a world filled with noise; electronics, projection screens, and productions, my soul is fed by the quiet, the peace I find in these stone walls.
After just a few Sundays, we knew we had found our church home. The people were welcoming, and the Episcopal theology best aligned with our spiritual needs. It was the first time my husband and I had been at a church where it was ok to question, to struggle, to think about our faith. We were allowed to be on a Faith journey with God.
One of our former Priests described his view on the Episcopal Church, not as a church running from the devil, but as a church running to God. That felt right to us, and we continue to feel that here at St. James’.
In a world where it seems Christianity is sometime hijacked and weaponized, to create division, I feel the Episcopal church, is about inclusion, and creating a space for everyone to be on their own personal journey with God. I believe here at St. James’ we try our best to be Jesus follows, to love our neighbors as ourselves, all of our neighbors.
That’s why we continue to support St. James with our time, talent and treasure. In this season of giving, we are asking you to think about why St. James’ is important to you and how your gifts to St. James’ can help us continue to be that welcoming presence in the faith community.
